Have you read about the Jansenists or the Convulsionnaires of Saint-Médard.

They were a group of religious zealots that also demonstrated supernatural invulnerability to external trauma. According to one instance I read in The Holographic universe, the public would participate in their demonstrations. One man allegedly swung a hammer into a female practitioner's abdomen and she was unaffected, but the brick wall behind her was damaged.
